Definitivamente iba a vomitar, pero era imposible, el pasamontañas se interpondría.
I was definitely going to be sick, but it was impossible, the balaclava would get in the way.
Miré a Jason.
Su figura vestida de negro saltaba nerviosamente de un pie al otro mientras permanecíamos de pie en el callejón, esperando la llamada telefónica.
I looked at Jason.
His black-clad shape was nervously hopping from foot to foot as we stood in the alleyway, waiting for the phone call.
Sus ojos eran como platillos detrás de la máscara. Él estaba emocionado, yo no. Toda la energía parecía haber abandonado mi cuerpo.
His eyes were like saucers behind the mask. He was pumped, I was not. All the energy seemed to have gone from my body.
Mis piernas se sentían como espagueti y mis palmas estaban cubiertas de sudor. Mi estómago se revolvía al pensar en lo que estábamos por hacer.
My legs felt like spaghetti and my palms were slick with sweat. My stomach was churning with the thought of what we were about to do.
El teléfono sonó. Jason y yo nos miramos mutuamente. Era el momento. Jason contestó y la voz rugió por el teléfono.
“¡AHORA!”
The phone rang. Jason and I looked at each other. This was it. Jason answered and the voice roared out of the phone.
“GO!”
Salimos rápido del callejón a la calle, mis pies luchaban por mantenerse en la acera resbalosa y casi tumbo a una anciana.
We exploded out of the alley into the street, my feet straining for grip on the slippery bricks causing me to almost knock over an old lady.
Jason gritaba, “¡FUERA DE NUESTRO CAMINO! ¡FUERA DE NUESTRO CAMINO!”
Jason was screaming, “OUT OF THE WAY! GET OUT OF THE WAY!”
Vi el semáforo más adelante, a solo cincuenta metros, pero parecía tan lejos. El tráfico estaba detenido en ambos lados mientras titilaban las luces para los peatones.
I saw the traffic lights ahead, only fifty metres away, but oh so far. The traffic was stopped on all sides while the pedestrian lights blinked.
Había algunas personas cruzando y cuando pasamos corriendo, pecho agitado, vi a Paul nuestro observador. Él estaba parado en la esquina opuesta, con el teléfono aún en la mano y una gran sonrisa en el rostro.
There were a few people crossing and as we sprinted across, chest heaving, I saw Paul our spotter. He was standing on the opposite corner, phone still in his hand and a big grin stretching across his face.
Estábamos del otro lado ahora, Jason en el sendero peatonal y yo en la calle. Aún teníamos mucho por avanzar, otros cuatrocientos metros.
We were on the other side now, Jason on the footpath and me on the road. We had so far to go, another four hundred metres.
Yo estaba casi sin aliento, jadeando, con las piernas sintiéndose como plomo.
I was gasping for breath, heaving, legs feeling like lead.
El tiempo parecía ir más lento mientras me daba cuenta cuán vulnerables éramos en ese momento, en medio de la calle principal, un sábado por la mañana.
Time seemed to slow down as I realised how vulnerable we now were, in the middle of the main street on a Saturday morning.
Mi único pensamiento era llegar al auto. “Lleguemos al auto y estaremos a salvo”, pensé.
My only thought was to get to the car. “Get to the car and we’ll be safe”, I thought.
Un hombre grande intentó ponerse en camino de Jason en el sendero peatonal, pero lo pensó mejor cuando Jason le gritó fuertemente.
A large man attempted to get in Jason’s way on the footpath, then thought the better of it as Jason shrieked at him.
Corrimos a lo largo del centro de compras; madres con carros de bebés, vagabundos y chicos cool, todos mirándonos mientras trastabillábamos corriendo exhaustos.
Aún faltaba una centena de metros para llegar.
We ran past the shopping centre; mums with prams, homeless men and cool kids, all staring at us as we stumbled past, utterly exhausted.
Still a hundred metres to go.
Tropezando por las vías del tranvía, caímos sobre la verja frente a mi auto y colapsamos dentro.
Tripping across the railway tracks, we fell over the fence in front of my car and collapsed inside.
Quitándonos los pasamontañas, de repente nos reímos juntos pensando en lo que habíamos hecho.
Stripping off the balaclavas, we suddenly laughed at each other at the thought of what we had done.
¡Qué broma! Imagina lo que habrán pensado todas esas personas en la calle. Deben haber pensado que éramos ladrones de bancos, criminales o, quizá, jefes de la mafia.
What a prank! Imagine what all those people on the street would have thought. They would have been thinking we were bank robbers, criminals or, maybe, underworld bosses.
No se dieron cuenta de que éramos solo dos tipos aburridos divirtiéndose un poco.
They didn’t realise it was just two bored guys having some fun.
Mi estómago dolía de reirme tanto del hombre que había intentado detener a Jason. Definitivamente pensó que era real y quería actuar como un héroe pero se asustó. ¿Se arrepentiría de sus acciones por el resto de su vida?
My belly hurt from laughing so much at the large man who had tried to stop Jason. He definitely thought it was real and wanted to act like a hero but got scared. Would he regret his actions for the rest of his life?
Encendí el auto y lentamente condujimos alrededor de Ia manzana para recoger a Paul, nuestro observador, que nos había llamado para decirnos que las luces estaban en verde.
I started the car and we slowly drove around the block to pick up Paul, our spotter, who had phoned to tell us the lights were green.
Jason me miró. “¿Deberíamos darle a la gente un último espectáculo?”
Jason looked at me. “Shall we give the people one last show?”
Dimos un frenazo para detenernos junto a Paul y saltamos fuera del auto, con los pasamontañas puestos, gritándole.
“¡Entra al auto! ¡ENTRA AL AUTO!”
We screeched to a halt next to Paul and jumped out, balaclavas on, screaming at him.
“Get in the car! GET IN THE CAR!”
Lo tomé por el cuello y lo empujé al asiento trasero, golpeando la puerta tras él.
I grabbed him by the neck and pushed him into the back seat, slamming the door behind him.
Jason y yo subimos de un salto y salimos a toda velocidad riéndonos del pobre Paul, quien tenía su cabeza en el piso, y de la gente aún paralizada por el falso secuestro que acabábamos de realizar.
Jason and I jumped in and hauled away at top speed, laughing at poor Paul with his head in the footwell, and the people still gasping at the faux kidnapping we’d just performed.
Más tarde esa noche, revivimos nuestra broma bebiendo algunas cervezas. Mientras disfrutaba la bebida fría, mi teléfono sonó.
“¿Hola?”
Later that night, we recounted our prank over some beers. As I enjoyed the cold liquid, my phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Es la policía. Nos gustaría interrogarlo por un presunto robo y secuestro. Por favor acérquese a la estación inmediatamente”.
Nuestra broma ya no era divertida.
“This is the police. We’d like to question you over an alleged robbery and kidnapping. Please make your way to the station immediately.”
Our prank was funny no more.
