Contesto el teléfono. Es mi madre. Ella suena emocionada.

I answer the telephone. It’s my mom. She sounds excited.

She says they are going to have a party tonight.

Pregunto, “¿Qué estan celebrando?”

“¡El premio de $250.000!” ella dice.

I ask, “What are you celebrating?”

“The win of $250,000!” she says.

Pregunto, “¿Cómo?”

Ella responde, “En un tiquete de raspadito.”

I ask, “How?”

She replies, “On a scratch-it ticket.”

¡$250.000! No puedo creerlo. Mi madre nunca gana nada.
$250,000! I can’t believe it. My mom never wins anything.
Yo necesito $250.000.
I’m happy for her, but I’m also jealous. I need $250,000.
Voy a la casa de mis padres. Hay casi 30 personas allí.
I go to my parent’s house. There are about 30 people there.
Todos están bebiendo, bailando y cantando. Mi madre esta muy feliz.

Sirvo una bebida.

Everyone is drinking, dancing and singing. My mother is very happy.

I pour a drink.

Mi padre viene. Él también esta muy feliz. Habla sobre sus planes.
My dad comes over. He is also very happy. He talks about his plans.

Firstly, he is going to retire. Secondly, they are going on a holiday.

I can see they are both very excited.

My mom gets everyone’s attention. She gives a speech and says thank you to everyone.
Ella anuncia el premio. Todos aplauden y festejan.

La fiesta continúa hasta tarde.

She announces the win. Everyone claps and cheers.

The party continues until late.

I ask my mom, “Can I see the ticket?”

I go with her to the bedroom. She has the ticket hidden in a pillow.

Yo miro el tiquete de raspadito.

Yo no veo tres símbolos iguales.

I look at the scratch-it ticket.

I don’t see three symbols the same.

I look at the ticket again and again, but still the same.
Yo digo, “Este tiquete no es ganador.”

Ella responde, “¡Sí, mira aquí!”

I say, “This ticket is not a winner.”

She replies, “Yes, look here!”

Ella señala donde dice: ‘Premio: $250.000’.

Yo explico que ella necesita tres símbolos iguales.

She points to where it says: ‘Prize: $250,000’.

I explain that she needs three symbols the same.

Su humor cambia completamente. No hay risas ni sonrisas.
Her mood completely changes. There is no more laughing and smiling.

Ella luce impactada.

Her eyes and mouth are wide open.

Her face turns white. She looks shocked.

Río y abrazo a mi mamá.

Despacio ella dice, “Creo que necesito otra bebida.”

I laugh and hug my mom.

Slowly she says, “I think I need another drink.”
