Un leñador estaba cortando un árbol en el bosque. Era tarde en el día y el leñador estaba cansado.

A woodman was cutting down a tree in the forest. It was late in the day and the woodman was tired.

No estaba concentrado y su hacha se resbaló de sus manos y cayó dentro de un estanque cercano. El estanque era profundo y era imposible para el leñador recuperar el hacha.

He was not concentrating and his axe slipped out of his hands and into a nearby pond. The pond was deep and it was impossible for the woodman to retrieve the axe.

Él era pobre y el hacha era todo lo que tenía para ganarse la vida. No tenía suficiente dinero para comprar un hacha nueva.

He was poor and the axe was all he had to earn a living. He didn’t have enough money to buy a new axe.

Ahora no tendría dinero para alimentar a su familia. El leñador estaba muy triste y comenzó a llorar.

Now he would have no money to feed his family. The woodman was very sad and he began to cry.

El dios Mercurio de pronto apareció y preguntó cuál era el problema.

The god Mercury suddenly appeared and asked what the trouble was.

El leñador le dijo lo que había sucedido e, inmediatamente, Mercurio se sumergió en el estanque. Cuando salió de nuevo, sostenía una maravillosa hacha de oro.

The woodman told what had happened, and straightaway, Mercury dived into the pool. When he came up again, he held a wonderful golden axe.

“¿Es esta tu hacha?” preguntó Mercurio al leñador.

“Is this your axe?” Mercury asked the woodman.

“¿Es esta tu hacha?” preguntó Mercurio al leñador.

“Is this your axe?” Mercury asked the woodman.

“No,” contestó el honesto leñador, “esa no es mi hacha.”

“No,” answered the honest woodman, “that is not my axe.”

Mercurio apoyó el hacha en la orilla y volvió a sumergirse en el estanque. Esta vez sacó un hacha de plata.

Mercury put the golden axe on the bank and dived back into the pool. This time he brought up an axe of silver.

Nuevamente, el leñador dijo que no era de él. Explicó que su hacha era simplemente una ordinaria con mango de madera.

Again, the woodman said it wasn’t his. He explained that his axe was just an ordinary one with a wooden handle.

Mercurio se sumergió por tercera vez. Cuando salió tenía el hacha correcta. El leñador estaba muy feliz de tener su hacha nuevamente y agradeció a Mercurio.

Mercury swam down for the third time. When he came up again he had the correct axe. The woodman was very glad to have his axe again and thanked Mercury.

Mercurio estaba muy satisfecho con la honestidad del leñador.

Mercury was very pleased with the woodman’s honesty.

“Admiro tu honestidad,” dijo, “y, como recompensa puedes quedarte con las tres hachas. Con la de oro y la de plata además de la tuya.”

“I admire your honesty,” he said, “and, as a reward you may have all three axes. The gold and the silver as well as your own.”

El leñador, feliz, volvió a su hogar con sus tesoros. Pronto, todos en el pueblo conocían su historia de buena fortuna.

The happy woodman returned to his home with his treasures. Soon, everybody in the village knew of the story of his good fortune.

Había varios otros leñadores en el pueblo. Ellos eran codiciosos y  creían que fácilmente podían obtener la misma buena fortuna.

There were several other woodmen in the village. They greedy and believed that they could easily win the same good fortune.

Se apresuraron a internarse en el bosque y escondieron sus hachas entre los arbustos. Fingieron haberlas perdido y luego lloraron y llamaron a Mercurio para que los ayudara.

They hurried out into the woods and hid their axes in the bushes. They pretended they had lost them and then cried and called on Mercury to help them.

Mercurio pronto apareció. A cada uno mostró un hacha de oro, y cada uno de ellos dijo que era el hacha que había perdido.

Mercury soon appeared. To each one he showed an axe of gold, and each one said it was the one he had lost.

Para su sorpresa, Mercurio no les dio el hacha de oro. En cambio, los golpeó en la cabeza con ella y los envió a casa.

To their surprise, Mercury did not give them the golden axe. Instead, he hit them on the head with it and sent them home.

– La honestidad es la mejor política.

– Honesty is the best policy.
